The park, located on the Virginia/Kentucky border, is one of only two Interstate Parks in the nation. The park encompasses 4,500 acres of greenwood lands and mountain scenery, including the Grand Canyon of the South. History The name Breaks is derived from the break in Pine Mountain created by the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River as it carved a 1,000 foot gorge on its way to the Ohio River. The Russell Fork River has carved the largest canyon east of the Mississippi. Its craggy untouched beauty reaches more than five miles long and 1,600 feet deep.

Park features olympic pool, a lake with paddleboats and fishing, hiking trails, picnic areas, camping areas, a visitor center, a gift shop, playground equipment, cabins, a lodge, motel rooms, a convention center, a restaurant and amphitheater. Numerous events scheduled.
Fishing
Anglers can enjoy river and lake fishing, targeting species like smallmouth bass, catfish, walleye or trout. Both artificial lures and live bait are permitted for use. A Virginia state license is required to fish within the park's boundaries.

Location
Breaks Interstate Park is located near Pikeville

Picnicking
Breaks Interstate Park offers numerous picnic areas with grills, tables and shelters. Some spots offer stunning views of the gorge.
Bicycling
Mountain biking is popular, with over 12 miles of trails available. Be aware that difficulty levels vary significantly.

The park offers bike rentals for those without their own equipment. Helmets are strongly recommended.

For a challenging ride, try the Overlook Trail which features steep climbs and descents; not suitable for beginners.

Riders should be cautious on shared-use paths to avoid collisions with hikers or other cyclists who may also use these routes.

It's important to note some areas might have restrictions during certain seasons due to wildlife activity or weather conditions.

Remember: always respect trail rules and closures in order protect both yourself and the environment you're enjoying.
Birding
Birdwatchers can enjoy spotting over 160 species, including the rare Cerulean Warbler and Peregrine Falcon. The park offers guided birding tours for enthusiasts. Other common sightings include Scarlet Tanagers, Indigo Buntings, and various woodpeckers. Birding is best during spring migration season.
