WALLOWA NATIONAL FOREST
The Wallowa -Whitman National Forest contains 2.3 million acres ranging in elevation from 875 feet in Hells Canyon, to 9845 feet in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Our varied forests are managed as sustainable ecosystems providing clean water, wildlife habitat and valuable forest products. And, for things to do and places to be, the Wallowa-Whitman is the setting for a variety of year-round recreation. You are welcome at the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. More.

The Forest ranges from the Blue Mountains and rugged Wallowa Mountains down to the spectacular canyon country of the Snake River on the Idaho border. It is the largest National Forest administrative unit in the Pacific Northwest Region.

The Wallowa NF was created in 1908 from the combination of seven Forest Reserves, and the Whitman NF was created in 1908 by combining three Forest Reserves. The Wallowa and Whitman National Forests have been managed together since 1954.
Camping
1. Wallowa Lake State Park: This park offers a variety of camping options, including tent sites, RV hookups and cabins for rent.

2. Eagle Cap Wilderness Area: For those who prefer backcountry camping, this area has plenty of spots to set up camp while enjoying the wilderness.

3. Minam State Recreation Area: Located along the banks of the Wild and Scenic River in Oregon's rugged northeast corner between La Grande and Enterprise.

4. Ollokot Campground: It is located near Hells Canyon National Recreational Area offering both single:family campsites as well as one group site that can accommodate 60 people.

5. Two Pan Trailhead Campground: A small campground with horse facilities available on:site making it popular among equestrians planning trips into Eagle Cap Wilderness.

6. Willow Creek Horse Camp: Another great option if you are traveling with horses or mules; each site includes hitching posts & corrals.

7. Promontory Park: Offers yurts rentals alongside traditional tent/RV spaces.

8. Huckleberry Tent And Breakfast North Idaho Glamping: If you're looking for something more luxurious than typical camping but still want an outdoor experience then glamping might be perfect!

9. Boundary Campground: Situated at high elevation providing spectacular views over surrounding mountains.

10. Salt Creek Summit Sno-Park: During summer months when snow isn't present Salt creek summit sno-park provides dispersed primitive style camping opportunities.



Trails
1. Eagle Cap Wilderness Trail: This is the largest trail in Wallowa National Forest, spanning over 360 miles with varying levels of difficulty and terrain. It offers stunning views of alpine lakes, granite peaks, lush meadows and diverse wildlife.

2. Chief Joseph Mountain Trail: A challenging hike that stretches for about 14 miles round trip offering panoramic vistas from its summit at an elevation gain of approximately 4,000 feet.

3. Hurricane Creek Trail: An easy to moderate level hiking path stretching around six miles along a creek through beautiful wildflower fields leading up to spectacular mountain views.

4. Ice Lake Basin Trails: These trails offer breathtaking sights including waterfalls cascading into crystal clear glacial lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains; they are moderately difficult due to steep climbs but well worth it for their scenic beauty.

5. Imnaha River Loop Hike: This loop trail spans nearly ten-mile long featuring river crossings as well as high desert landscapes showcasing Oregon's geological diversity.

6. Minam River Lodge: Accessible only on foot or horseback this remote lodge has several nearby trails ranging from gentle walks near Minam lake,to more strenuous hikes towards Red's Horse Ranch.

7. Aneroid Lake via East Fork Wallowa River:A popular day-hiking destination,this seven mile trek leads hikers past picturesque creekside campsites before culminating at the serene waters of Aneroid lake.

8. Bonny Lakes Via West fork wollowa river: At just under nine-miles one way,the Bonney Lakes provide ample opportunity for fishing while also providing access points onto other longer distance treks such as Polaris Pass or Glacier Peak.

9. Hidden peak: A less frequented route compared others within wallowa national forest Hidden peak provides solitude alongside sweeping panoramas across eastern oregon's rugged wilderness landscape.

10. Matterhorn Via ice-lake: One among many routes ascending Matterhorn,this trail is a challenging 14 mile round trip hike that rewards hikers with unobstructed views of the surrounding Eagle Cap Wilderness from its summit..

11. Twin Lakes: A moderate six-mile one way trek leading to two alpine lakes nestled beneath craggy peaks, Twin Lakes offers ample opportunity for camping and fishing.

12. Sacajawea Peak: The highest point in Wallowa National Forest at over 9,800 feet,this strenuous climb provides panoramic vistas across Oregon's rugged wilderness landscape.

13. Mirror Lake: This popular day-hike destination features an easy three-mile loop around Mirror lake offering stunning reflections of nearby mountains on calm days.

Directions
1. Starting from Portland, head east on I:84 for approximately 260 miles.
2. Take exit 261 toward La Grande/Baker City and merge onto OR:82 E/Island Ave.
3. Continue driving on OR:82 E for about 60 miles until you reach Elgin.
4. In Elgin, turn right onto N Main St/OR:204 W and continue following OR-204 W for around 20 miles.
5. Upon reaching Union, take a slight left onto McAlister Rd/Old Hwy No12/South River St (signs will indicate Enterprise/Wallowa Lake).
6. Follow McAlister Rd/Old Hwy No12/South River St as it becomes S River Street/Hwy No3/Main Street through downtown Union.
7. Continue straight ahead on Highway No3 towards Medical Springs/Joseph/Wallowa Lake State Park.
8. Drive along HWY NO3 Southbound past Lostine heading south into the mountains.
9. After passing through Lostine drive another approximatey five minutes before turning Right at sign indicating "Joseph".
