UHRENHOLDT MEMORIAL STATE FOREST
UHRENHOLDT MEMORIAL STATE FOREST
The Uhrenholdt Memorial State Forest is a serene and picturesque woodland oasis that captivates visitors with its natural charm. Spanning over several thousand acres, this forest offers a diverse array of outdoor recreational activities for all nature enthusiasts, including hiking, camping, bird-watching, and fishing. Its majestic and towering tree canopies provide a sheltered haven for a wide variety of wildlife, creating a harmonious ecosystem that is a delight to explore. With its tranquil streams, cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking views, the Uhrenholdt Memorial State Forest is a true gem of Wisconsin's wilderness, an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful escape into nature.
History of the Area
The forest's history dates back to the early 1900s when the state of Wisconsin began purchasing abandoned or tax-delinquent lands in an effort to rehabilitate them and provide public recreation opportunities. The acquisition of these lands became part of a larger conservation movement in the state.

In the case of Uhrenholdt Memorial State Forest, Lawrence Uhrenholdt played a crucial role in the acquisition and management of the land. In the 1940s, Uhrenholdt recognized the potential of these abandoned farms and worked tirelessly to convince the state to acquire them. He argued that the land could be restored to its natural state and serve as a refuge for wildlife, as well as a place for people to enjoy outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and hiking.

Uhrenholdt's efforts were successful, and the state of Wisconsin purchased the first parcels of land to establish the forest in the late 1940s. Over the years, additional tracts of land were acquired, expanding the forest's boundaries. Today, the Uhrenholdt Memorial State Forest is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as a state natural area.
