History of the Area
Two Inlets State Forest is a 16,000-acre state forest located in northwestern Minnesota near the town of Park Rapids. The history of the forest can be traced back to the early 20th century when the state of Minnesota began acquiring land in the area.

In the early 1900s, the state recognized the need to conserve forests for timber production, wildlife habitat, and recreation. Two Inlets State Forest was initially established in 1928 when the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources acquired the first tract of land in the region. The forest was named after the nearby Two Inlets Lake, which is known for its two distinct inlets.

Over the years, additional parcels of land were acquired, expanding the state forest's size. The forest management practices focused on sustainable timber harvesting, ensuring the regeneration and sustainability of the forest ecosystem.

The forest also played a crucial role in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program during the Great Depression. From 1934 to 1941, the CCC established multiple camps in Two Inlets State Forest, providing employment and vocational training to young men. The CCC camps were responsible for various conservation and forestry projects, such as tree planting, trail construction, and fire suppression.

Two Inlets State Forest has become increasingly popular for outdoor recreation. The forest offers a wide range of activities, including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and birdwatching. It attracts visitors from both Minnesota and neighboring states due to its serene natural beauty and abundant wildlife.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources continues to manage and preserve Two Inlets State Forest, ensuring its sustainable use and conservation for future generations.
