Reid State Park bears the distinct honor as being Maine's first State-owned Saltwater Beach. In 1946, prosperous businessman and Georgetown resident Walter E. Reid donated land to the State of Maine to be preserved forever, and a few years later Reid State Park became a reality.

Today, thousands of visitors enjoy the park's long, wide sand beaches like Mile and Half Mile, which are rare in Maine. Enjoyed as a recreational resource, the beaches are also essential nesting areas for endangered least terns and piping plovers and resting and feeding areas for other shorebirds. Rarer than beaches along Maine's coast are large sand dunes, like those at Reid.

From the top of Griffith Head, a rocky headland overlooking the park, visitors can view sweeping seascapes and spot the lighthouses on Seguin Island, The Cuckolds, and Hendricks Head. Visitors can also see several islands, including: Damariscove, a thriving fishing community in Colonial times; Outer Head, protected as a tern sanctuary; and Southport, where noted naturalist Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring.
Swimming
1. Reid State Park offers two sandy beaches for swimming: Mile Beach and Half Mile Beach.
2. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season to ensure swimmer safety.
3. The park's lagoon area provides a calmer water option, ideal for families with young children.
4. Swimming is also possible in Todd's Point tidal pools at low tide, offering unique marine life views.
5. Water temperatures can be chilly even in summer due to Maine's northern location; wetsuits may be beneficial.
6. Changing rooms and restrooms facilities are available near both main beach areas for swimmers' convenience.

Boating
The park, located in Maine, offers a variety of boating options for visitors. The lagoon area is perfect for canoeing and kayaking with calm waters providing an ideal environment especially for beginners or those looking to enjoy a leisurely paddle. For more experienced individuals seeking adventure, the open ocean allows sailing and motorized boating opportunities where one can explore further off-shore areas.
Fishing
Enjoy fishing in the saltwater lagoon for species like striped bass, bluefish, and mackerel. Freshwater options include trout and perch.

Visitor Comments, Memories and Reviews
July 20 Heaven on Earth by Allison Lee Stanley
park review stars; one to five Reid State Park has a little of everything. They offer 3 miles of hiking trails, ledges to climb and explore, 2 very beautiful beachs with surf, a lagoon area, which is great for the kiddos and a wonderful park manager, Samantha Wilkinson! Growing up in Arrowsic (sister island), I visited Reid often! Being at the park has helped me in many ways. Relaxation is top priority. It has a very clean and comforting atmosphere and the staff is great!
