PROVINCE ROAD STATE FOREST
Province Road State Forest is a picturesque natural retreat nestled in New Hampshire, offering a diverse range of captivating landscapes and recreational opportunities. The forest encompasses sprawling acres of lush woodlands, serene streams, and enchanting hiking trails, providing hikers and nature enthusiasts with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of the great outdoors. With its rich biodiversity and scenic beauty, Province Road State Forest serves as a haven for wildlife and is a tranquil escape for visitors seeking moments of solitude and peace in the midst of nature's serenade.
History of the Area
Province Road State Forest is located in Belknap County, New Hampshire, and encompasses an area of approximately 1,200 acres. The forest is primarily situated within the towns of Gilmanton and Barnstead. The area was designated as a state forest in the early 20th century and has a rich history in terms of land use and conservation efforts.

In the early 1900s, the Province Road area was heavily logged, as timber was in high demand for construction and manufacturing purposes. However, after years of deforestation, the land was left barren and susceptible to erosion and other ecological issues. Recognizing the importance of reforestation and conservation, the state of New Hampshire took steps to restore the land.

In 1913, the state of New Hampshire established the Province Road State Forest, with the primary objective of reforesting the area and restoring its ecological balance. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a work relief program, played a significant role in the park's development during the 1930s. CCC workers were responsible for planting trees, constructing hiking trails, and creating recreational facilities within the forest.
