The park overlooks the Petaluma River and San Pablo Bay from the east-facing slopes of 1,558 foot Mount Burdell.

The name "olompali" comes from the Miwok language and may be translated as "southern village" or "southern people." The Coast Miwok inhabited at least one site within the area of the present-day park continuously from as early as 6,000 BC, until the early 1850s.

Olompali contains "kitchen rock," a large boulder used as a mortar in which early people ground acorns and seeds into a fine flour for food preparation. Many women would gather near such grinding rocks to prepare food and socialize.
History of the Area
Located in Marin County, California, the area now known as Olompali State Historic Park has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The Coast Miwok people were its earliest inhabitants and left behind significant archaeological evidence.

In 1843, it became part of Mexican land grant Rancho Olompali awarded to Camilo Ynitia - one of the few Native Americans to retain their lands during this period. In 1860s-70s, James Black purchased most parts for his daughter Mary Burdell's estate which included Victorian-style mansion built on site.

The park also witnessed some notable events from modern American cultural history: It was home base for Chosen Family commune in late '60s; Grateful Dead band members frequented here too.

It officially gained state historic status and opened up as public recreational space only by mid-'90s after being privately owned or inaccessible due various reasons including fire damage & legal disputes over ownership.
