History of the Area
Harry E. Dobbins Memorial State Forest is a state forest located in Sullivan County, New York. The forest was named in honor of Harry E. Dobbins, who served as the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation from 1955 to 1971.

The history of the state forest dates back to the late 19th century when the area was heavily logged for timber. Due to the unregulated logging practices at the time, the land suffered from deforestation and degradation. In the early 20th century, efforts were made to restore and reforest the area to prevent soil erosion and protect the water supply.

In 1918, the first part of the forest was acquired by New York State. Over the years, additional parcels of land were added, expanding the forest's size and protecting more of the region's natural resources. The state forest now spans over 2,234 acres and features a diverse mix of hardwood and conifer trees, as well as wetlands and streams.

The forest serves as an important habitat for wildlife, including deer, wild turkey, various bird species, and small mammals. It also offers recreational opportunities for visitors, such as hiking, fishing, camping, and picnicking. The forest's trails provide scenic routes for nature enthusiasts to explore and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Harry E. Dobbins Memorial State Forest is part of the greater Catskill Park, which encompasses over 700,000 acres of protected land in the Catskill Mountains. The state forest is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to ensure sustainable use and conservation of its resources.
